Gargoyles dropped by defending champions
TORONTO – The Grand River Gargoyles were dropped 117-16 by the reigning champion Toronto Eagles in AFL Ontario play Saturday at Humber College.
The Eagles jumped ahead in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Gargs trailed 39-0 at the end of the first quarter, 53-7 at halftime and 85-7 after the third quarter.
Michael Gentile and Sam Wood scored a goal apiece for the Gargs.
James Goetz and Aaron Falcioni had four goals each for the Eagles while Jay Himat and Owen Dunn had three each. Adding one goal apiece were Dean Gavin, Frank Lussier, Garrett Reynolds and Kevin Minaker.
The Eagles remain unbeaten this season with five wins in five outings. They’re third in the nine-team league’s standings with 20 points and 376.60 percentage. Ottawa Swans and Etobicoke Kangaroos are also undefeated as they’ve won six games apiece and are tied with 24 points. Ottawa has a 459.15 percentage and Etobicoke’s at 417.16.
The Gargs are seventh at 1-4-0 and four points with a 53.12 percentage.
The Gargs are to host the Hamilton Wildcats (3-3-0, 154.03) Saturday at 12 p.m. at Margaret Greene Park.
