Gargoyles trampled by Toronto Eagles

GUELPH – The Grand River Gargoyles fell behind early and couldn’t recover as they were dumped 131-27 by the Toronto Eagles in Australian Football League Ontario play Saturday at Margaret Greene Park.

The third-place Eagles scored enough points in the first quarter to win the game as they led 43-6 at the end of the opening quarter, 65-19 at halftime and 85-27 after the third quarter.

Andrew Matthews had two goals for the Gargs while Tyler Schwartzentruber and Brandon Skinner had one apiece.

Aaron Falcioni and Neil Casey hit for five goals apiece for the Eagles while David Starr had four and Benjamin Eddy added three. Getting one goal apiece were Luke Gavin, Jake Born and Kevin Minaker.

The Eagles are third in the 10-team league at 4-1-1 and a 331.46 percentage while the Gargs are ninth at 2-5-0 and 56.21.

The Gargs are to play the second-place Ottawa Swans (4-1-1 400.00) at Ottawa Saturday at 2 p.m.
