GCVI Gaels complete regular season with win at Bishop Mac

GUELPH — The Guelph CVI Green Gaels scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half to claim a 21-7 victory over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics in District 10 high school football play Thursday at Bishop Mac.

The Gaels had led 7-0 at halftime in the rainy match.

Quarterback Simon Chaves scored two touchdowns for GCVI while Brandon Fergio scored one. Rahiem Suleiman kicked two converts while Ben Boddy kicked one.

Spencer Verdun scored the touchdown for Bishop Mac while Nick Guardiero booted the convert.

The game was the final one of the regular season for both teams.

GCVI will finish second at 4-1-0 and get a bye in next week’s quarter-finals. Bishop Mac will finish sixth at 0-5-0 and will play a quarter-final next Friday, against either the Centennial Spartans or Ross Royals.

The league’s regular season is to come to an end with a pair of games Friday. The St. James Lions (4-0-0) are to host the Lourdes Crusaders (1-3-0) at 3 p.m. and Centennial (2-2-0) and Ross (2-2-0) are to meet at Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m.

St. James has clinched a first-place finish while the winner of the Centennial-Ross game will finish third and the loser fourth. If the Spartans and Royals tie Friday’s game, they’ll need to go to the sixth tie-breaker to place the Spartans third and Royals fourth in the standings. It would be broken using the points scored by the two tied teams against St. James. Centennial lost 30-22 to the Lions Oct. 14 while the Royals were beaten 10-8 by St. James Sept. 29.

Lourdes will finish fifth even with a win over St. James Friday as the Crusaders would lose any tie-breaker with Centennial or Ross due to losses to both teams earlier in the season. They’ll play either the Spartans or Royals in the quarter-finals.

St. James and GCVI are to host semifinal games Nov. 4 while the D10 championship game is to be played Nov. 11.
