GCVI Gaels finish atop D4/10 field hockey standings

GUELPH — The Guelph CVI Green Gaels grabbed a first-place finish in the District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey league with a win and a tie Wednesday.

Each of the nine teams in the league played two games Wednesday on the final day of the regular season.

The Gaels tied the Ross Royals 1-1 and edged the Centennial Spartans 2-1 in games played at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.

Those results left the Gaels with a 6-0-2 record and in a tie for top spot with the Bishop Macdonell Celtics (7-1-0) who won twice Wednesday. The Gaels won the tie-breaker thanks to a 4-0 win over Bishop Mac on the opening day of the regular season Sept. 19.

By finishing first, the Gaels will play the eighth-place Norwell Redmen (1-4-3) of Palmerston in the quarter-finals. Second-place Bishop Mac will play seventh-place Centre Dufferin Royals (1-4-3) of Shelburne, third-place Ross (6-1-1) will play sixth-place Orangeville Bears (1-4-3) and fourth-place Centre Wellington Falcons (3-2-3) of Fergus will play fifth-ranked Centennial (2-3-3).

Quarter-final games are slated for Monday with two games at Varsity Field and the other two at Bishop Macdonell.
