Grand River Gargoyles surprised by High Park

ETOBICOKE – The High Park Demons rallied in the second half to down the Grand River Gargoyles 61-37 in Australian Football League Ontario play Saturday at Humber College.

The Gargs led in the first half as they were up 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 28-24 at halftime before High Park surged ahead 51-30 by the end of the third quarter.

Andrew Matthews had three goals for the Gargs to increase his total to a league-high 15 on the season. Sam Wood and Sam Skelhorn each had one goal.

Richard Tyrrell, Ryan Hayes and Shaun Hayes each had two goals for High Park while Matthew Gallus and Dale Simnett scored one apiece.

The win was the first of the season for High Park who trail the league at 1-4-0. The Gargs are seventh at 2-3-0.

There are no league games on the Canada Day holiday weekend.

Next game for the Gargs is slated for July 8 when they’re to tangle with the Hamilton Wildcats (1-3-0) at noon at Mohawk Park.
