Gryphon basketball men toppled by Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons’ hopes of qualifying for the OUA men’s basketball league playoffs took a hit Friday night when they were handed an 87-76 setback by the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Centre.

The loss leaves the Gryphs eighth in the nine-team West Division at 5-16 with three games to play and also leaves the Gryphs with a loss to every team in the division. Top six qualify for the playoffs and McMaster is sixth at 7-14 and Algoma Thunderbirds seventh at 6-15. Waterloo is fifth at 8-14 and Laurier Golden Hawks fourth at 9-12. Brock Badgers lead the division at 19-2 while Western Mustangs are second at 14-7 and Windsor Lancers third at 10-11. Lakehead Thunderwolves are ninth at 2-19.

Friday, the Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Waterloo led 23-20 at the end of the first quarter, 41-40 at halftime and 61-60 at the end of the third quarter.

A 13-4 run at the beginning of the final quarter put the Warriors ahead by 10 and they stretched the gap to 13 with 1:41 to play. Jonathan Wallace drained a pair of jump shots in the final minute to close the gap.

Wallace finished with 18 points for the Gryphs while Taylor Boers had 13, Daniel Dooley 10 and Drew Walford nine. Wallace and Walford each had six rebounds and Kieran Naus had five while Dooley had four assists and two steals.

Nedim Hodzic struck for 31 points for Waterloo while Simon Petrov had 20 and Justin Malnerich 12. Hodzic grabbed 16 rebounds while Evan Rodenburg had 12 and Petrov had eight assists.

The Gryphs are to play Laurier at Waterloo’s Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park Sunday at 2 p.m. before closing out their regular season with home games against Waterloo Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Western Feb. 17 at 3 p.m.
