Gryphon basketball women upend Ottawa

OTTAWA – The Guelph Gryphons claimed their first win of the OUA women’s basketball season Saturday night when they downed the Ottawa Gee-Gees 80-66 at Ottawa’s Montpetit Hall.

The Gryphs rallied from a first-quarter deficit to record the win. They trailed 13-2 with less than three minutes to go in the first quarter, but scored 10 consecutive points to tie it 13-13 nine seconds into the second quarter. The Gryphs were up 39-34 by halftime and stretched that lead to 60-51 by the end of the third quarter.

Guelph shot better than Ottawa in all facets of the game. They shot 41 per cent on field goals, 44 percent on three-pointers and 89.5 percent on free throws. That was about 10 percent better on both field goals and three-pointers and 13.5 better on free throws.

Ottawa won the rebound battle, grabbing 51 while the Gryphs hauled down 38, but Guelph made the Gee-Gees pay for their 19 turnovers as they scored 31 points off those rebounds. The Gryphs had 12 turnovers that resulted in 15 points for the Gee-Gees.

Sarah Holmes had a big game for the Gryphs as she had 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals while Ashley Wheeler had 10 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and three steals. Skyla Minaker had 14 points and Haley Belyk also hit double-digits with 10 points. Burke Bechard had six rebounds and Minaker had four assists.

Maia Timmons hit for 16 points for Ottawa while Amelie Hachey had 15 and Brigitte Lefebvre-Okanku added 10. Angela Ribarich and Lefebvre-Okanku pulled down 10 rebounds apiece while Jennifer Crowe had seven. Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus had four assists and Hachey had four steals.

The win leaves the Gryphs at 1-3 while Ottawa falls to 1-1.

The Gryphs are to host the York Lions (0-2) Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre in the first of three consecutive home games against Toronto opponents. They’re to play the Ryerson Rams (1-2) Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. and Toronto Varsity Blues (1-2) Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
