Gryphon field hockey women blank McGill for first win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons picked up their first win of the OUA women’s field hockey season Sunday as they shut out the McGill Martlets 6-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Gryphs scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the game to head to the victory.

The locals led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter before a scoreless second quarter. They added another goal in the third quarter and two more in the fourth.

Elly Peters led the Gryphon scoring with two goals, the first two of the game that came less than four minutes apart. Getting one goal apiece were Eva Cuddihy, Delaney Jacklin, Harper Griffin and Madison Martin.

The Gryphs outshot McGill 10-1 and took five of the game’s six penalty corners. Guelph was called for 18 fouls, one more than the Martlets, although there were no fouls called in the second half.

Maryam Maamoun was in net for the Gryphs.

The win lifts the Gryphs out of the West Division basement and into third in the four-team division. Waterloo Warriors lead at 3-1-0 while the McMaster Marauders are at 2-2-0, the Gryphs are at 1-2-1 and the Western Mustangs are at 1-3-0.

York Lions lead the East Division at 4-0-0 and they’re followed by the Toronto Varsity Blues at 3-1-0, Queen’s Gaels at 1-2-1 and McGill at 0-4-0.

The game also completed Guelph’s contests against East Division squads. They’re to play home-and-home series with their West Division rivals during the remainder of the regular season.

Those series are to start with a pair of games against Western this week. They’re to play Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Western’s Mustangs Field in London.
