Gryphon field hockey women blanked by UBC
TORONTO — The Guelph Gryphons suffered their third loss in as many outings at the U Sport women’s field hockey championship tournament Saturday when they were dropped 5-0 by the UBC Thunderbirds.
UBC scored twice in the first half and three times in the second half for the win.
Stephanie Norlander scored three consecutive goals for UBC while Hannah Eborall and Hannah Haughn netted the other goals.
The only team in the four-team tournament with a losing record, the Gryphs finished fourth at the completion of the round-robin segment. They scored three goals and allowed 13.
UBC finished first at 2-0-1 while the Victoria Vikes were second at 1-0-2 and the Toronto Varsity Blues were third at 1-1-1.
The Gryphs and Varsity Blues are to meet in the bronze-medal game Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the University of Toronto’s Back Campus Fields. UBC and Victoria are to battle for gold at 3 p.m.
Guelph will be making its ninth consecutive appearance in the bronze-medal match and they’ve won bronze five times, all since 2009.
