Gryphon field hockey women clobber McGill
LONDON — The Guelph Gryphons opened the OUA women’s field hockey championship tournament by dumping the McGill Martlets 10-0 Friday.
The Gryphs scored five times in each half for the victory.
Katherine MacMillan and Alexa Corrado each had hat tricks for the Gryphs while league MVP Olivia Lane tallied twice and Nicole Paola and Ciara Condon added single goals.
The Gryphs had finished second in the standings at 9-1-2 while McGill had been seventh at 0-11-1.
Guelph advances to play Western (2-6-4) in the semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m. The sixth-place Mustangs had upset the third-place York Lions with a 1-0 victory in penalty shots Friday.
Semifinal winners gain berths in Sunday’s gold-medal match at 3 p.m. and also in the U Sports field hockey championship tournament at Toronto Nov. 3 to 6 if the Toronto Varsity Blues (11-1-0) are one of the winners. If the Blues lose their semifinal to the Waterloo Warriors (2-6-4), then the winner of the gold-medal game will join the Blues in the national tournament.
The Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds and runners-up Victoria Vikes have already clinched berths in the U Sports tournament.
