Gryphon field hockey women close with win and tie
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons scored a win and a tie Sunday on the final day of the OUA women’s field hockey league’s regular season to finish second in the standings.
In play at York University, the Gryphs tied the Toronto Varsity Blues 1-1 and dropped the Waterloo Warriors 9-0.
Against Toronto, Alexa Corrado of the Gryphs scored in the second half a little over 10 minutes after Hilary Ziraldo had scored for the Varsity Blues.
Morgan Kelley was in net for the Gryphs and she faced two shots, the same number her teammates fired at the Toronto net guarded by Sara Fredo.
The Gryphs scored seven times in the first half in the win over Waterloo.
Kayla Magarella struck for four goals including three in a row to lift her seasonal total to 14 goals. Corrado and Danielle Crumpton added two goals apiece while Olivia Finch scored the other goal. Rebecca Plouffe had an assist.
Kelley picked up the shutout although she didn’t face any shots. The Gryphs took 10 shots.
York Lions finished in first place at 11-1-0 and were followed by the Gryphs at 8-1-3, Toronto at 6-3-3, Queen’s Gaels at 4-6-2, Western Mustangs at 3-7-2, McGill Martlets at 3-9-0 and Waterloo at 1-9-2.
All eight teams qualify for next weekend’s OUA championship tournament at York. The Gryphs are to play McGill in the first round.
