Gryphon field hockey women clout Waterloo
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed a spot in the OUA women’s field hockey league’s semifinals after they dropped the Waterloo Warriors 11-0 Friday in the quarter-finals at York University’s Alumni Field.
The Gryphs scored six times in the first half to put the game away early. The scoring included three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Kayla Magarelli struck for a hat trick for the Gryphs while Alexa Corrado and Maria Murray added two goals apiece. Melissa Vogl, Alice Stubbings, Danielle Crumpton and Olivia Finch also scored.
Amanda Hodgert picked up the shutout in net.
The Gryphs had finished the regular season in second place at 8-1-3 while Waterloo was seventh at 1-9-2.
In the other quarter-finals, the York Lions blanked the McMaster Marauders 4-0, Toronto Varsity Blues slipped by the McGill Martlets 2-0 and the Queen’s Gaels defeated the Western Mustangs 2-0.
Saturday’s semifinals have York playing Queen’s at 9 a.m. and Guelph playing Toronto at 11 a.m.
Winners advance to Sunday’s gold-medal game at 3 p.m. while the losers move on to the bronze-medal game at 1 p.m.
