Gryphon field hockey women downed by Toronto at national tourney

TORONTO — The OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues struck for three goals in the second half as they dropped the Guelph Gryphons 4-1 Friday at the U Sports women’s field hockey championship tournament.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first half, Guelph’s Olivia Lane scoring the goal for the Gryphs to tie the score at 1-1 at halftime.

Alison Lee sparked the Varsity Blues in the second half with a pair of goals two minutes apart late in the frame.

Lauren Sudac and Megan Johansen struck for the other goals for Toronto.

For the Gryphs, the loss was their second in as many outings at the national tournament.

In Friday’s other game, Canada West rivals UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes tied 1-1.

UBC and Victoria are tied for first in the tournament at 1-0-1 while Toronto is third at 1-1-0 and Guelph fourth at 0-2-0.

Round-robin play on the U of T’s Back Campus fields is to wrap up Saturday with Guelph playing UBC at 12:30 p.m. and Toronto and Victoria tangling at 3 p.m.

The Gryphs will be looking for their second consecutive bronze-medal win and sixth in seven years Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Their opponent will be decided Saturday.

Sunday’s gold-medal match is set for 3 p.m.
