Gryphon field hockey women drop Western

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored three times in a span of four minutes in the first half on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s field hockey play Wednesday night at Varsity Field.

The goals helped the Gryphs to a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Kendra Puttick opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Kayla Magarelli followed with Guelph’s second goal two minutes later and Alice Stubbings added the third goal two minutes after Magarelli’s goal.

Magarelli and Olivia Finch added goals in the second half for the Gryphs.

Sarah Gahan and Brigid Sterling scored for Western.

The Gryphs are second in the league at 7-1-2, trailing the York Lions (9-1-0). Toronto Varsity Blues (5-3-2) are third and they’re followed by the Queen’s Gaels (4-6-2), Western (3-5-1), McGill Martlets (3-9-0) and Waterloo Warriors (1-7-1).

The Gryphs are to complete their regular-season schedule with a pair of games at York’s Alumni Field Sunday. They’re to battle Toronto at 10:45 a.m. and Waterloo at 4 p.m.

All eight teams in the league qualify for the OUA championship tournament that is to be held Oct. 27 to 29 at York.
