Gryphon field hockey women edged in OUA final

TORONTO – Jaslan Stirling’s goal in the 43rd minute lifted the York Lions to a 3-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA women’s field hockey final Sunday at York’s Alumni Field.

The teams had been tied 2-2 at halftime, but Guelph never led in the game.

Stirling had opened the scoring for York in the fifth minute before Rebecca Plouffe tied it for the Gryphs seven minutes later.

York’s Sydney McFaul put the Lions ahead in the 15th minute before Kayla Magarelli pulled the Gryphs even 12 minutes later.

Alycia Gray picked up the win in net for York while Morgan Kelley was in net for the Gryphs.

York outshot Guelph 7-6.

The championship win was the first for York since 1996.

The Lions advance to the best-of-three U Sports final Nov. 3 to 5 at Thunderbird Park in Victoria, B.C., against the Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds who have won the national title six consecutive years.
