Gryphon field hockey women fall to Victoria at national tourney

TORONTO — A pair of goals four minutes apart late in the second half lifted the Victoria Vikes to a 4-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in U Sports women’s field hockey championship tournament play Thursday.

The Gryphs grabbed the early lead when Olivia Lane scored the only goal of the opening half late in the half.

Victoria shot ahead with two goals three minutes apart in the second half, but Lane’s second goal of the game tied it up again two minutes after Victoria’s second goal.

The game remained deadlocked for 11 minutes until the Vikes hit for their two late goals.

Kristina Walters-Shu, Cilia van Nierop, Lindsay Cole and Amanda Kurianowicz scored the goals for Victoria.

Morgan Kelley was in net for the Gryphs while Victoria had Larissa Piva in goal.

The UBC Thunderbirds edged the OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 in the other match.

Conference rivals meet in Friday’s games as UBC and Victoria are to tangle at 4 p.m. and the Gryphs are to battle the Varsity Blues at 6:30 p.m.

The preliminary round wraps up Saturday with a pair of games as the Gryphs are to play UBC at 12:30 p.m. and Toronto and Victoria are to meet at 3 p.m.

Medal games are set for Sunday with the bronze-medal match slated for 12:30 p.m. and the gold-medal match to follow at 3 p.m.
