Gryphon field hockey women fourth at national tourney

TORONTO — The Guelph Gryphons recorded their second fourth-place finish at the U Sports women’s field hockey championship in four years.

The Gryphs were handed a 2-0 setback by the Toronto Varsity Blues in the national bronze-medal match at the University of Toronto’s Back Campus Fields Sunday.

Hilary Ziraldo scored once in each half for Toronto.

The Gryphs lost all four games they played in the tournament and were outscored 15-3.

Elizabeth O’Hara picked up the win in net for Toronto while Morgan Kelley took the loss for the Gryphs.

UBC won the gold-medal game 2-1 over the rival Victoria Vikes. The win came in penalty strokes, field hockey’s version of a shootout.

It’s UBC’s sixth consecutive title win.
