Gryphon field hockey women hit late to top York

GUELPH – A goal late in the second half lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 1-0 victory over the York Lions in OUA women’s field hockey play Wednesday at Alumni Field.

Kayla Magarelli’s goal with 10 minutes to go in the match proved to be the game’s only goal.

Morgan Kelley picked up the shutout in net for the Gryphs.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and it avenged a 3-1 loss to York in league play at Kingston Sept. 24.

The result gave York its first loss of the season and it prevented the Lions from clinching a first-place finish. The Lions lead at 8-1-0 while the Gryphs are second at 5-1-2 with four games to play.

Next game for the Gryphs is set for Saturday against the McGill Martlets (3-6-0) at Toronto. Game time is 3:15 p.m.
