Gryphon field hockey women lose, tie

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons collected a point in two games in OUA women’s field hockey play Sunday at Queen’s.

The Gryphs battled the host Gaels to a scoreless tie before falling 3-1 to the York Lions.

Jessica Ballard opened the scoring against York when she hit for the Gryphs four minutes into the match.

However, York tied it up a minute later and then scored twice in the second half for the win.

Jaslan Stirling had a pair of goals for the Lions while Madison Mitchell had the other one.

For the Gryphs, the tie with Queen’s was the first time they hadn’t beaten the Gaels since they tied 2-2 at Queen’s on Oct. 5, 2013. The loss to York was the first to the Lions since being edged 1-0 at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium Sept. 23, 2006.

The results leave the Gryphs third in the standings at 2-1-2. The Lions lead at 5-0-0 while the Western Mustangs are second at 3-1-1. The Toronto Varsity Blues are at 1-1-2 and they’re followed by Queen’s at 1-2-2, McGill Martlets at 1-5-0 and Waterloo Warriors at 0-3-1.

The Gryphs are to play Western at Toronto Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
