Gryphon football schedule for 2017’s out, host Ottawa in opener

GUELPH — The Guelph Gryphons are to start their 2017 OUA football season at home on the final weekend of August against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Using last year’s records as the basis for deciding the toughness of a team’s schedule, the Gryphs have the toughest schedule in the 11-team league as the combined 2016 records of their 2017 opponents is 36-28. That compares with the Western Mustangs and McMaster Marauders at 35-29, Carleton Ravens at 34-30, York Lions at 33-31, Queen’s Gaels at 32-32, Waterloo Warriors at 31-33 and the other four (Laurier Golden Hawks, Ottawa, Toronto Varsity Blues and Windsor Lancers) at 29-35.

Home games for the Gryphs will be against Ottawa (6-2) Aug. 27, Windsor (2-6) Sept. 9, McMaster (6-2) Sept. 23 and Laurier (7-1) Oct. 14. All home games at Alumni Stadium are set to begin at 1 p.m.

The road game are slated for Sept. 4 at Western (7-1) at 7 p.m., Sept. 16 at Toronto (2-6) at 1 p.m., Sept. 30 at Waterloo (0-8) at 1 p.m. and Oct. 21 at Carleton (6-2) at 1 p.m.

This year the Gryphs won’t play either Queen’s (3-5) or York (2-6) during the regular season.

The Gryphs finished last season tied for sixth with Queen’s and won a tie-breaker to get a playoff berth. They lost in the quarter-finals to McMaster.

Guelph’s Homecoming Game Sept. 23 continues a recent trend of playing McMaster in odd-numbered years. They defeated the Marauders 33-23 in 2015 and 24-22 in 2013, but lost 37-13 in 2011. The Gryphs will be looking to get back on a winning trend on Homecoming as last year’s 50-16 loss to Western was the first Homecoming setback since the 2011 loss to McMaster.
