Gryphon hockey men add to their win streak
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons scored three times in the third period to double the Brock Badgers 4-2 in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Brock opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period before the Gryphs tied it with the only goal of the second. A pair of goals by the Gryphs in the first seven minutes of the third gave Guelph a lead it wouldn’t give up.
Todd Winder, Josh McFadden and Cody Thompson each had a goal and an assist for the Gryphs while Marc Stevens scored the other goal. Scott Simmonds, who played for Guelph in the Canadian university men’s rugby championship tournament at Alumni Stadium earlier in the day, had two assists.
Chris Maniccia and Ayden MacDonald scored for Brock with help from Brandon O’Quinn, Matt MacLeod, Brayden Stortz and Skylar Pacheco.
The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 53-20 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while Brock was scoreless on its lone power play.
Jason Da Silva stopped 18 shots for the win in the Guelph net while Clint Windsor took the loss for Brock.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Gryphs who are third in the West Division at 8-3-1, one point behind the leading duo of the York Lions (9-4-0) and Laurier Golden Hawks (8-2-2). Brock is eighth at 4-5-3.
The Gryphs have a pair of home games at the Gryphon Centre next weekend as they’re to host the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-10-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Nipissing Lakers (4-5-3) Saturday at 3 p.m.
