Gryphon hockey men get third straight win
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for two goals in the final four minutes of Friday night’s game at the Gryphon Centre to record their third consecutive win in OUA men’s hockey play.
A goal by Manny Gialedakis with four minutes to go and a shorthanded marker by Andres Kopstals with 18 seconds to go helped give the Gryphs a 3-1 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
The Gryphs never trailed in the game. Cody Thompson’s goal for the hosts with 1:50 to go in the second period broke the scoreless knot.
Lakehead pulled even almost six minutes into the third when Daniel Del Paggio scored with help from E.J. Faust.
Gryphon assists in the game were awarded to Josh McFadden (two assists), Todd Winder, Seth Swenson and Reilly O’Connor.
Guelph outshot Lakehead 37-27 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Lakehead with four power plays and Guelph with two.
Jason Da Silva was the winning netminder for the Gryphs while Nic Reynard took the loss for Lakehead.
The win lifts the Gryphs to fourth in the West Division at 5-3-1 and gives them a 4-1-1 record at home. Lakehead is sixth at 4-4-1.
The Gryphs are back at home Saturday when they’re to tangle with the fifth-place Waterloo Warriors (4-3-2 and 2-1-0 on the road) at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
