Gryphon hockey men nipped by Lions in series opener
TORONTO – A pair of goals in the first two minutes of the third period did in the Guelph Gryphons in their OUA men’s hockey West Division semifinal opener with the York Lions Wednesday night at York.
Those goals gave the Lions a 3-2 win at the Canlan Ice Centre.
The Gryphs had scored the only goal of the first period and the teams tallied once apiece less than a minute apart in the second.
Mac Nichol netted the opening goal for Guelph at 1:32 of the first period and Rob Lepine hit for the second goal 59 seconds after York had tied it in the second.
Mark Raycroft, Manny Gialedakis, Cody Thompson and Seth Swenson each had an assist for the Gryphs.
Greg Milner, Derek Sheppard and Trevor Petersen on a power play hit for the goals for the Lions. They each also had one assist.
Petersen’s winning goal came at the two-minute mark of the third, 54 seconds after Sheppard had tied the score and 26 seconds after Raycroft had been assessed a minor penalty for slashing.
The Lions were whistled for 24 minutes in penalties including a 10-minute misconduct while the Gryphs were called for 10 minutes.
York outshot the Gryphs 29-24 and went 1-for-2 on its power plays while the Gryphs were 0-for-4.
Scott Stajcer took the loss in net for Guelph while Mack Shields picked up the win for York.
Second game of the best-of-three series is slated for Thursday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
If the Gryphs win that game, the third and final game of the series is to go Saturday at 7 p.m. at York.
Winner of the series will play the winner of a series between the Ryerson Rams and Windsor Lancers. Windsor won the opener 4-2 at Windsor Wednesday night. Second game is to be played Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletics Centre in Toronto. If a third game is needed, it’s to be played Sunday night at Toronto.
