Gryphon hockey men to face York in West semifinals

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons will face the York Lions in OUA men’s hockey West Division semifinal play this week.

While the Gryphs swept the Brock Badgers in the best-of-three divisional quarter-finals with a 5-1 win in the opener and a 4-3 win in overtime in the second game, the Lions took two from the Lakehead Thunderwolves. York won 3-2 at Thunder Bay Wednesday and 3-1 at home Saturday.

The Ryerson Rams and Windsor Lancers won the other quarter-final series with Game 3 wins Saturday. Ryerson beat the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 while Windsor surprised the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 in overtime.

Ryerson had finished the regular season in first in the West Division at 22-4-2 while York was second at 18-6-4, Guelph fourth at 15-12-1 and Windsor sixth at 13-13-2.

The Gryphs dropped both of their regular-season meetings with York by 3-1 scores as the Lions won Oct. 20 at the Gryphon Centre and Jan. 8 at York.

Dates for the divisional semifinal series are expected to be announced Monday.
