Gryphon hockey men to start series with Windsor Thursday

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons and Windsor Lancers are to begin their OUA men’s hockey West Division quarter-final playoff series Thursday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs finished first in the West at 21-6-1 and Windsor was eighth at 10-11-7.

While the teams were 16 points apart in the standings, the Lancers had success against the Gryphs in the regular season as Windsor won both of their meetings. The Lancers prevailed 5-3 at the Gryphon Centre Oct. 28 and 4-1 at Windsor Dec. 2.

The loss at Windsor put an end to a nine-game winning streak for the Gryphs. However, they’ve won 11 of 13 games since then.

The Gryphs had six players record 20 or more points during the regular season – Todd Winder (18 goals-16 assists), Cody Thompson (11-22), Scott Simmonds (12-20), Marc Stevens (14-11), Manny Gialedakis (7-16) and Josh McFadden (6-17).

Andrew Masters and Jason Da Silva split time in net, although Masters has played most of the games in 2018. He had a 13-5-0 record, 2.85 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. Da Silva finished at 8-2-0 with 2.95 goals-against average and .899 save percentage.

The Lancers didn’t have any player accumulate 20 or more points. They were led by Kody Gagnon with 7 goals and 12 assists and Ian Parker at 9-10.

Jonathan Reinhart was the goaltender for the bulk of Windsor’s games and he amassed an 8-11-0 record, 2.69 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.

The best-of-three series is to start Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

Second game is to go Saturday at the Windsor Arena at 7:30 p.m.

If a third game is needed, it’s set for Sunday at the Gryphon Centre at 7:30 p.m.
