Gryphon hockey men top Western to extend streak

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons extended their win streak to five games when they downed the Western Mustangs 6-4 in OUA men’s hockey league play Friday night at Western’s Thompson Arena.

Two consecutive goals in the second period gave the Gryphs a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. A power-play goal by captain Scott Simmonds put Guelph up 3-1 and was the first of a trio of goals scored in a minute and 54 seconds. Western’s Cordell James reduced the gap to a single goal 1:25 after the goal by Simmonds, but J.P. Villeneuve restored the two-goal advantage 29 seconds after the goal by James.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and the Gryphs led 4-2 after the second.

Manny Gialedakis, Ryan Migliaccio, Simmonds, Villeneuve, Todd Winder and Marc Stevens scored once apiece for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Patrick Kudla, Josh McFadden, Winder, Andres Kopstals, Migliaccio, Cody Thompson and Mark Raycroft.

Kyle Petit, James, Ray Huether and Steven Beyers responded with single goals for Western. Robert Polesello assisted on two of the goals while Cody Brown, Trevor Warnaar, Rylan Ball, Rylan Bechtel and James each had one assist.

Western outshot the Gryphs 43-40 and the Mustangs went 2-for-4 on the power play while the Gryphs went 1-for-6.

Jason Da Silva was the winning netminder for the Gryphs while Brendan McGlynn was charged with the loss for Western.

The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 7-3-1 while Western is 10th at 3-7-1.

Guelph is to play the Brock Badgers (4-4-3) at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
