Gryphon hockey men topple Waterloo

GUELPH — The Guelph Gryphons struck for the final three goals of the game to claim a 6-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.

J.P. Villeneuve’s goal at 8:49 of the second period proved to be the winner for the Gryphs as it put them up 4-3, a score that stood until the final minute of the game when the Gryphs scored two empty-netters.

The teams had been tied 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Josh McFadden, Todd Winder, Reilly O’Connor, Villeneuve, Tryg Strand and Nick Boyer each had a goal for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Marc Stevens, Cody Thompson, Chris Brill-Morgan, Andres Kopstals and Zach McFadden.

Joey Champigny, Mitch Elliot and Phillip Fife each scored for Waterloo. Ryan Hanes, Michael Morgan, Markson Bechtold, Keigan Goetz and Eric Cimino picked up assists.

The Gryphs outshot the Warriors 46-25.

Jason Da Silva was the winning goaltender as he stopped 21 shots in the Guelph net. Andrew Masters stopped the only shot he faced in the 43 seconds he played in net. Trevor Martin made 40 saves in the Waterloo net.

Waterloo went 1-for-3 on its power play while Guelph went 1-for-2.

The Gryphs vault to third in the West Division with the win, their fourth in a row. Guelph’s at 6-3-1. The York Lions lead at 9-2-0 while the Laurier Golden Hawks are second at 7-2-1.

The Gryphs have a pair of road games next weekend as they’re to play the Western Mustangs (3-6-1) at London Friday at 7 p.m. and Brock Badgers (3-4-3) at St. Catharines Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
