Gryphon hockey men, York to start series Wednesday

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons and York Lions have agreed on dates for their best-of-three OUA men’s hockey league West Division semifinal series.

The Lions will have home-ice advantage in the set that is to begin at their Canlan Ice Centre Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Game 2 is to go at the Gryphon Centre Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

If a third game is needed, it’s to be played Saturday at York starting at 7 p.m.

The teams met twice during the regular season with York winning 3-1 both times, Oct. 20 at Guelph and Jan. 8 at York.

Both teams swept their divisional quarter-final series in two games, the Gryphs ousting the Brock Badgers and the Lions eliminating the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

York finished second in the division at 18-6-4 while Guelph was fourth at 15-12-1.

Seth Swenson led the Gryphs during the regular season with 12 goals and 32 points while Rob Lepine had 15 goals and 31 points and Cody Thompson had six goals and 27 points. In net, Scott Stajcer was 10-7-0 with a 3.31 goals-against average.

For York, Derek Sheppard had 12 goals and 32 points, Trevor Petersen had 11 goals and 31 points and Greg Milner had 15 goals and 21 points. Mack Shields was 13-7-0 in net with a league-best 1.78 goals-against average.
