Gryphon hockey men’s win streak halted by Windsor

WINDSOR – Only one team has beaten the Guelph Gryphons in OUA men’s hockey play since the Gryphs dropped a pair of games in a trip to Montreal Oct. 20-21 and that’s the Windsor Lancers.

Saturday night, the Lancers handed the Gryphs a 4-1 setback at the South Windsor Arena. That was Guelph’s first loss since the Gryphs fell 5-3 to Windsor at the Gryphon Centre Oct. 28 and there were nine wins between those setbacks.

Saturday, Windsor scored once in the first period and twice in the second before the teams scored once apiece in the third.

Seth Swenson scored Guelph’s goal at 3:28 of the third with help from Cody Thompson and Max McCutcheon.

Jake Brown, Kody Gagnon, Kyle Hope and Chris Scott had the goals for Windsor while assists were awarded to Konner Haas, Adam Burnett, Blake Blondeel, Todd Ratchford, Kyle Haas, Brown and Ian Parker.

The Gryphs outshot Windsor 36-34, but were held scoreless on six power plays while the Lancers scored once on their six power plays.

Jason Da Silva was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net while Jonathan Reinhart had the win for Windsor.

Such is the closeness of the West Division that the result leaves three teams tied for first place and another team a point behind as the league heads into its exam and Christmas break.

The Gryphs, Ryerson Rams and York Lions each have 23 points while the Laurier Golden Hawks have 22. The Gryphs and Ryerson have identical 11-4-1 records while York’s at 11-5-1 and Laurier’s at 10-4-2.

The Gryphs return from the break with a game against the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-11-1) Jan. 4 at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
