Gryphon hockey women blank Varsity Blues
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons scored once in each period to blank the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-0 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday night at Varsity Arena.
Sydney Davison hit for the eventual game-winner when she scored with about five and a half minutes to go in the opening period.
Claire Merrick added the next goal with 30 seconds to go in the second and Kaitlin Lowy completed the scoring with an empty-netter with 35 seconds to play in the third.
Katherine Bailey collected two assists while Mallory Young and Molly Crossman had one apiece.
Valerie Lamenta stopped 27 shots for the shutout. Her teammates fired 30 at the Toronto net guarded by Valencia Yordanov.
Both teams were held scoreless on five power plays.
The win, Guelph’s sixth in a row in league play, left the Gryphs second in the standings at 10-2-4-0. They’re two points behind the Queen’s Gaels (9-3-1-3), one ahead of the Western Mustangs (9-2-3-2), two ahead of the Brock Badgers (8-3-4-2), four ahead of the Nipissing Lakers (8-2-4-2) and nine up on the Varsity Blues (8-0-7-1).
The Gryphs have eight games to go in their regular season. The first four of those games will be at the Gryphon Centre starting with another game against the Varsity Blues Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
They also have home games against Queen’s (Jan. 27), UOIT Ridgebacks (Jan. 28) and Brock (Feb. 1) and road games against the Windsor Lancers (Feb. 3), Nipissing (Feb. 9), Laurentian Voyageurs (Feb. 10) and Ryerson Rams (Feb. 17).
