Gryphon hockey women connect in third for win

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three third-period goals as they bounced back from their OUA women’s hockey league season-opening loss to the Ryerson Rams with a 4-1 victory over the York Lions Saturday at the Canlan Ice Centre.

York opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period before the Gryphs tied it with the only goal of the second.

Claire Merrick hit for the eventual game-winner for the Gryphs midway through the third before the Guelph squad added a pair of empty-net goals in the final minute and a half of the period.

Laura Crowdis, Kaitlin Lowy and Ashlee Lawrence also scored for the Gryphs while Kelly Gribbons, Chantal Gudbranson and Katherine Bailey each had one assist.

Avery Reeves scored for York while assists were awarded to Christina Chin and Steffei Samuel.

The Gryphs outshot York 36-31, the difference being a 14-9 advantage in the third period. Guelph was scoreless on six power plays while York didn’t score on three power plays.

Valerie Lamenta was the winning netminder for the Gryphs while Roxanne Kis took the loss for York.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 1-0-1-0 and York at 0-0-3-0.

The Gryphs are to play the UOIT Ridgebacks (1-0-1-0) at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
