Gryphon hockey women edged by Queen’s

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a single goal, but that was enough for them to suffer their first loss on home ice since their OUA women’s hockey league season opener.

A goal early in the second period lifted the league-leading Queen’s Gaels to a 1-0 win over the Gryphs Saturday at the Gryphon Centre. Their previous loss at home had come Oct. 19 when they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Ryerson Rams. Between those losses were eight wins, two of them in overtime.

Clare McKellar scored the lone goal of the game, assisted by Katrina Manoukarakis and Jessica Wakefield at 3:42 of the second period.

Stephanie Pascal stopped 20 shots for the shutout for Queen’s while Valerie Lamenta stopped 27 shots for the Gryphs.

Both teams were scoreless on their power plays, Guelph getting one and Queen’s four.

Queen’s leads the league at 11-3-2-3 while the Western Mustangs are second at 11-2-5-2 and the Gryphs third at 10-3-5-0.

The Gryphs will try to get back to their winning ways on home ice Sunday when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks (4-2-11-2) at 2 p.m.
