Guelph Gryphons vs. Western Mustangs in OUA women's hockey league play at Gryphon Centre

Gryphon hockey women head into break with win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons wrapped up the 2017 portion of their OUA women’s hockey league season with a 5-2 victory over the Western Mustangs Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs scored the first five goals of the game – three in the first period and two in the second – to claim the win.

Western scored late in the second period and added a power-play goal in the first minute of the third.

Kaitlin Lowy hit for a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Meagan Lee, Kristen Jay and Molly Crossman also scored. Claire Merrick assisted on two of the goals while Karli Shell and Lee each had one assist.

April Clark scored both goals for the Mustangs and Amanda Pereira assisted on both. Megan Taylor also had an assist.

Western outshot the Gryphs 21-20 thanks to a 10-4 advantage in the third period. The Mustangs went 1-for-3 on their power play and held the Gryphs scoreless on their three power plays.

Valerie Lamenta was the winning netminder for Guelph while Tareya Webster took the loss for Western.

With the win the defending OUA-champion Gryphs vaulted over the Mustangs and into third in the league at 7-1-4-0. Western is fourth at 6-1-3-2.

The Gryphs return to league play Jan. 3 when they’re to host the 13th-place Laurier Golden Hawks (1-0-7-1) at the Gryphon Centre at 7:30 p.m.
