Gryphon hockey women nipped in opener

GUELPH – The Ryerson Rams spoiled the party for the Guelph Gryphons Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

On a night when the Gryphs raised their second consecutive OUA women’s hockey championship banner, Ryerson rallied from a two-goal deficit to edge the Gryphs 4-3 to open the regular season.

Guelph led 3-1 with a minute to go in the second period, but Ryerson responded with three consecutive goals – two in the third period on its power play – to claim the win.

The Gryphs led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second. Ryerson scored with 35 seconds to go in the first period and with 28 to go in the second.

The Rams didn’t leave it as late in the third as they scored in the seventh and 18th minutes. Kryshanda Green tied the score for Ryerson at 6:11 of the third with her second goal of the game while Alex Rodriguez fired home the winner at 17:13.

Ailish Forfar scored the other goal for Ryerson while assists were awarded to Alyssa Connolly, Rodriguez, Kayla Karbonik and Forfar.

Kaitlin Lowy, Kelly Gribbons and Mackenzie Wong scored the goals for Guelph. Lowy, Mallory Young, Kristen Jay and Miranda Lantz each had one assist.

The Gryphs held a 37-24 advantage in shots including a 19-5 margin in the second period. Rachel Seeley picked up the win in net for Ryerson while Valerie Lamenta was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net.

The Gryphs didn’t take many penalties, but they proved costly as the Rams scored on both of their power plays. The Gryphs were 1-for-6 on their power play.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions (0-0-2-0) Saturday at York’s Canlon Ice Sports Complex. Game time is 2 p.m.
