Gryphon hockey women seeded third for national tournament

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have been seeded third for this week’s U Sports women’s hockey championship tournament at Charlottetown.

At Charlottetown, the top seeds are the Canada West champion Alberta Pandas who were 23-5-0 in the regular season before winning all four of their playoff games.

Quebec champion Montreal Carabins are seeded second. They went 15-4-1 in the regular season before also winning all four of their playoff games.

The Gryphons, who won the OUA championship on home ice Saturday, are seeded third and were 18-3-3 in the regular season and they won all five of their playoff matches.

The Atlantic champion St. Thomas Tommies are seeded fourth. They went 22-5-1 in their regular season and 4-1 in the playoffs.

Fifth seeds are Quebec finalist McGill Martlets who were 14-6-0 in league play and 2-2 in the playoffs.

Canada West finalist and defending national champion Manitoba Bisons are seeded sixth after going 20-5-3 during the regular season and 2-2 in the playoffs.

The host Prince Edward Island Panthers are seeded seventh. They went 14-13-1 during the regular season and lost both of their playoff games.

Eighth seeds are Ontario finalist Toronto Varsity Blues. They compiled a 15-6-3 record during the regular season and a 4-3 mark in the playoffs.

The Gryphs are to play Manitoba Thursday at 2 p.m. in the tournament’s opening game. Win or lose the Gryphs are to play Saturday in either a championship semifinal or a consolation semifinal.
