Gryphon hockey women to meet Waterloo in semifinals

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons will tangle with the Waterloo Warriors in the OUA women’s hockey league’s McCaw Cup semifinals.

The Gryphs swept the Windsor Lancers in two games in the best-of-three quarter-finals while Waterloo needed three games to dispose of the Western Mustangs, the first two games of that series requiring overtime.

The best-of-three semifinal is to start Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Game 2 is to go at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Fields Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

If a third game is needed, it’s to be played Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs and Waterloo split their regular-season matches, both winning on home ice. Guelph won 4-1 at the Gryphon Centre Jan. 5 and Waterloo won 3-0 at the Columbia Ice Fields Feb. 12.

The defending OUA champion Gryphs finished the regular season atop the league with a 16-4-3-1 record while Waterloo was fourth at 11-3-8-2.

The Gryphs and Warriors last met in the playoffs in 2014 when the Gryphs swept a quarter-final series in two games.

The winner of this year’s semifinal advances to the single-game McCaw Cup final with a berth in the U Sports championship tournament on the line. As the Queen’s Gaels are hosts and get a berth in this year’s national tournament, the only other OUA team to go will be the league champions. They’ll be joined at the national tournament by two representatives from each of the other conferences — Atlantic, Quebec and Canada West.

The other OUA semifinal pits the second-place Nipissing Lakers (14-3-4-3) against the third-place Toronto Varsity Blues (15-2-7-0).

Sixth-place Queen’s (9-5-8-2) is to host the national tournament March 16 to 19 at Napanee’s Strathcona Paper Centre.
