Gryphon hoops men down winless Lakehead
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons returned from the Christmas and exams break with a 96-85 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at Lakehead’s Thunderdome.
The Gryphs jumped ahead 26-18 in the first quarter and held on to the lead the rest of the way. They were ahead 51-35 at halftime and 76-58 after the third quarter.
Taylor Boers led the Gryphs with 21 points while Daniel Dooley had 17, Jonathan Wallace 12, Banky Alade 10 and Tommy Yanchus nine. Alade and Yanchus grabbed six rebounds apiece and Dooley had six assists.
Mor Menashe had 21 points for Lakehead while Nick Burke netted 20 and Quincy Johnson followed with 13. Menashe also had eight rebounds and five assists while Jack Bull had two blocks.
The Gryphs sank 72 per cent of their free throws (18 of 25) while the Thunderwolves hit 69 per cent of theirs (9 of 13). The Gryphs also received 29 points from their bench, 12 more than Lakehead’s bench scored.
The result leaves the Gryphs at 3-8 and tied for fifth in the West Division while Lakehead is ninth at 0-11.
The teams are to meet again Saturday at 8 p.m. at Lakehead.
