Gryphon hoops men drop season opener

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons might be doing a little extra free-throw shooting at practice Thursday following an 84-79 loss to the McMaster Marauders in their OUA men’s basketball league season opener Wednesday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.

The Gryphs shot just under 39 percent on free throws, missing 11 of them in the game and nine in the fourth quarter alone.

McMaster hit 12 of 16 in the game, 75 percent, while Guelph was good on 7 of 18.

The Marauders led 26-17 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs rallied to go up 45-40 by halftime. McMaster regained the lead as the Marauders took a 65-60 advantage into the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer by Guelph’s Daniel Dooley with 2:40 to go cut the gap to three (75-72), but the Gryphs wouldn’t get closer as they hit two of seven field-goal attempts after that and two of four free throws. By comparison, the Marauders hit two of four field goals and all six free throws they took during that span.

Dooley led the Gryphs with 17 points while Banky Alade had 14, Aaron Nugent 13 and Drew Walford 10. Andrew Grant and Nugent grabbed eight rebounds apiece while Alade and Kieran Naus had seven apiece. Dooley and Alade each had four assists and Dooley and Rasheed Weekes each had two steals. Alade had three blocks and Grant had two.

Miles Seward collected 23 points for McMaster with Danylo Kostecki getting 14 and Kareem Collins, Matt Quiring and Sasha Simic each netting 12. Kwasi Adu-Poku had nine rebounds.

Next game for the Gryphs is Saturday when they’re to play the Windsor Lancers at Windsor in the season opener for the Lancers. Game time is 4 p.m.
