Gryphon hoops men tumble, Lakehead gets first win
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons became the first team to lose to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s basketball league play this season when they were dropped 87-67 Saturday night at Lakehead’s Thunderdome.
The Thunderwolves scored the final six points of the first quarter for a 20-12 lead. Lakehead also led 37-27 at the end of the first half and 63-47 after the third quarter.
Daniel Dooley picked up 16 points for the Gryphs while Drew Walford had 11, Jonathan Wallace 10 and Shawn Carey and Kieran Naus seven apiece. Naus had six rebounds while Tommy Yanchus had two assists and Banky Alade had two blocks.
Mor Menashe had 23 points for Lakehead while Nick Burke had 22 and Joel Jones, Mike Theodore and Kache Kopec each had eight. Jones had eight rebounds while Burke had five assists and Darnell Curtin had two assists and two steals. Jack Bull and Jones each had two blocks.
The Gryphs shot 30 per cent in the game, 14 less than Lakehead. Guelph also collected 22 points on foul shots as they took twice as many free throws as Lakehead, 32-16.
Guelph is seventh in the West Division at 3-9 while Lakehead is 11th at 1-11.
The Gryphs are to host the fourth-place Laurier Golden Hawks (4-8) Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Gryphons Athletics Centre.
