Gryphon hoops women clobber Brock
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons outscored the Brock Badgers by 12 points in each of the second and third quarters to run to a 76-44 victory in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The 32-point win by the Gryphs was their highest margin of victory in league play since they defeated the Nipissing Lakers by 68 (105-37) at North Bay Nov. 29, 2014, and their largest winning margin at home since dropping the Algoma Thunderbirds by 45 (89-44) Nov. 15, 2014.
Friday, the Gryphs led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter, 35-16 at halftime and 57-26 at the end of the third quarter.
The win put an end to a two-game losing streak for the Gryphs.
Megan Brenkel led the Gryphs with 13 points while Skyla Minaker had nine, Ivana Vujadinovic and Burke Bechard eight apiece and Quincy Sickles-Jarvis, Haley Belyk and Ashley White seven apiece. In all, 11 Gryphons collected at least four points in the match. Bechard had 11 rebounds and three steals while Minaker had five assists and Ashley Wheeler had two blocks.
Baelie Campbell had 17 points for Brock while Miranda Smith had 10 and Courtney Mcpherson had 10 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
The Gryphs shot 37 per cent from the field, 35 per cent on three-pointers and 79 per cent on free throws. Brock hit 26 per cent from the field, 13 per cent on three-pointers and 64 per cent of foul shots.
The Gryphs are sixth in the West Division at 7-9 while Brock is seventh at 5-10.
The teams are to play again at Brock Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
