Gryphon hoops women downed by Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons jumped in to an early lead before the Windsor Lancers stormed back for an 87-69 win in OUA women’s basketball at the St. Denis Centre Saturday.

Guelph led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter before Windsor shot ahead 43-32 by halftime and expanded that lead to 69-45 by the end of the third quarter.

The Gryphs had five players hit double figures in scoring – Burke Bechard with 16 points, Sarah Holmes 13, Skyla Minaker 12 and Haley Belyk and Ashley Wheeler with 10 apiece. Belyk and Wheeler had seven rebounds apiece while Bechard had three assists, four steals and two blocks.

Carly Steer had a game-high 25 points for Windsor while Emily Prevost netted 17, Jordan Gutt 15 and Eve Uwayesu 10. Uwayesu also had nine rebounds while Kaylee Anagnostopoulos had five assists and Prevost had four steals.

The loss left the Gryphs at 0-2 while the game was the first in league play this season for Windsor.

The Gryphs are on the road again next weekend as they’re to play the Carleton Ravens at Ottawa Friday and the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Ottawa Saturday.
