Gryphon hoops women fade in loss to Ryerson

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons faded in the second half as they dropped a 75-62 decision to the Ryerson Rams in OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs had kept the Rams close in the first half as they were tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 32-28 at halftime. The Rams extended their lead to 53-43 by the end of the third quarter.

While the Gryphs never led in the first quarter, they did trade the lead with the Rams several times in the second quarter, a jumper by Ivana Vujadinovic putting Guelph ahead 28-25 with just over three minutes to go in the opening half. That would be the last pints of the half for the Gryphs while Ryerson ran off seven consecutive points and the Rams added the first bucket of the second half.

The hosts actually shot the exact same on field goals in both halves, 32.4 percent. The Rams, though, shot better than the Gryphs as they sank 15 field goals in each half and had 32 attempts in the first half and 34 in the second half.

Working mainly in the paint, Sofia Paska led Ryerson with 26 points while Marin Scotten had 14 and Jama Bin-Edward added 11. Paska also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds while Cara Tiemens had five steals and Katherine Follis had two blocks.

Burke Bechard and Ashley Wheeler had 15 points apiece for Guelph while Ivana Vujadinovic and Megan Brenkel had nine each. Bechard, Wheeler, Skyla Minaker and Brenkel each had five rebounds while Minaker had five assists and Haley Belyk had four steals.

The result leaves the Gryphs tied for sixth in the West Division at 2-4 and Ryerson third in the East at 4-2.

The game was the second of three consecutive home games against Toronto-based teams. They defeated the York Lions last week and are to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-3) Saturday at 1 p.m.
