Gryphon hoops women fade in second in loss

GUELPH – The second quarter proved to be costly for the Guelph Gryphons as they were handed a 74-52 setback by the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter, but the Gryphs were limited to eight points in the second quarter and sank a single shot in the final six minutes of the half as the Gaels surged to a 39-25 lead.

Queen’s extended that lead to 60-36 by the end of the third quarter.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals while Haley Belyk had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals and Megan Brenkel collected 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. Skyla Minaker had five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ashley Wheeler had four rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Ashley White had three steals and a block.

Abby Dixon collected 16 points for Queen’s while Veronika Lavergne had 12 and Michelle Istead netted eight. Guelph native Andrea Priamo had five points, three assists and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The result left the Gryphs tied with the Western Mustangs for fifth in the West Division at 5-5. The win was the fourth in a row for Queen’s and the Gaels are tied for first in the East with the Carleton Ravens with 18 points apiece. At 9-0, Carleton has a game in hand on the 9-1 Gaels.

The game was the final one of 2017 for the Gryphs. They return from the exam and Christmas break with a trip to Thunder Bay to play the Lakehead Thunderwolves (6-3) Jan. 5 and 6.
