Gryphon hoops women leave Algoma behind
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons turned in strong opening and closing quarters as they claimed a 75-47 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs outscored Algoma 44-17 in those two quarters combined and 31-30 in the middle two quarters. Guelph led 20-4 at the end of the first quarter, 36-18 at halftime and 51-34 after the third quarter.
Ivana Vujadinovic led the Gryphs with 19 points while Ashley Wheeler had 11 and Haley Belyk and Megan Brenkel added nine apiece. Vujadinovic and Burke Bechard hauled down 11 rebounds apiece while Belyk, Julia Kokonis and Bechard each had three assists. Belyk had four steals and Quincy Sickles-Jarvis had two blocks.
Karina Cole had 10 points for Algoma while Marlee Ball had eight and Karly Fracalanza had six. Mairead Dunn and Kendra Cole each had six rebounds and Ball had three assists and Darryn Lindquist and Cole each had two steals.
The win was the third in four games for the Gryphs who improved to 9-10 on the season. It was Algoma’s sixth consecutive loss as the Thunderbirds dropped to 2-17.
Guelph is sixth in the West Division while Algoma is eighth. Top six qualify for the playoffs. Brock Badgers are seventh at 6-13.
McMaster Marauders and Windsor Lancers are tied for the lead at 15-4 while Lakehead Thunderwolves are third at 12-7, Western Mustangs fourth at 11-8 and Laurier Golden Hawks fifth at 10-10.
The Gryphs and Thunderbirds are to clash again Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 6 p.m.
Including that game, the Gryphs have five games to go in their regular season and three are at home. They’re to play at Waterloo Friday and at Laurier Feb. 11 and host Waterloo Feb. 14 and Western Feb. 17.
