Gryphon hoops women stingy in second half of win over Nipissing

NORTH BAY — The Guelph Gryphons held the Nipissing Lakers to 19 points in the second half as they ran to a 71-47 victory in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night.

The Gryphs led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter and 39-28 at halftime before they extended the lead to 55-40 by the end of the third quarter.

Despite hitting one of 18 three-point attempts, the Gryphs shot 34 per cent in the game and 67 per cent of free throws. By comparison, the Lakers shot 29 per cent and they were good on 50 per cent of their foul shots.

Haley Belyk led the Gryphs with 16 points while Samantha Renshaw had 13, Abbey Clark 11 and Ivana Vujadinovic nine. Belyk hauled down eight rebounds while Sarah Holmes had seven. Holmes also had six assists while Belyk had four steals and Megan Brenkel and Holmes each had three steals.

Claire Abbott had 12 points for Nipissing and Michaela Branker had 11 while Alexe Galipeau-Wilson had 10 rebounds.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 3-12 and Nipissing at 1-15. The Gryphs are 14th in the RPI ratings at .4489 while Nipissing is 17th (out of 17) at .4179. Top 12 in the RPI ratings qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs are to play the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-13) at Sudbury Saturday at 6 p.m.
