Gryphon hoops women take home opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons pulled away in the third quarter to drop the York Lions 73-54 in OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs scored 11 consecutive points to grab control of a close match as they turned a four-point lead with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter into a 15-point advantage (52-37) at the end of the quarter in their home opener. York did get the gap down to 10 points during the fourth quarter, but never got any closer.

Guelph had led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 31-28 at halftime.

Megan Brenkel led the Gryphs with 22 points and Burker Bechard netted 14 despite missing several minutes of game time having a bleeding nose tended after she was struck going for a rebound.

Sarah Holmes added 12 points while Haley Belyk had eight and Skyla Minaher netted seven.

Holmes had eight rebounds and two blocks while Brenkel had seven assists and Minaker had five steals.

Lindsay Shotbolt hit for 14 points for York while Haley Bowie had 13, Khara Keane nine and Megan MacLeod eight. Shotbolt hauled down 15 rebounds and also had three steals and two blocks. Lauren Golding had three blocks.

While the Gryphs were outrebounded 35-23, they shot 40 percent on field goals, 37 percent on three-pointers and 67 percent on free throws to York’s 36 percent of field goals, 27 percent on three-pointers and 47 percent on free throws.

York led twice during the game – by a single point two and a half minutes into the game and by two points (25-23) midway through the second quarter.

The win was the second in a row by the Gryphs and left them at 2-3 while York fell to 1-3.

The game was the first of three consecutive home games for the Gryphs. They’re to host the Ryerson Rams (2-2) Wednesday at 6 p.m. and the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-2) Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
