Gryphon lacrosse men knocked out of Baggataway Cup playoffs

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons saw their Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season come to an end Saturday when they were handed a 13-6 setback by the Brock Badgers at Brock’s Alumni Field in the opening round of the Baggataway Cup playoffs.

The Badgers scored the first two goals of the game, but took control with five consecutive goals in the second quarter. Brock was up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 9-2 at halftime and 11-5 after the third quarter.

Alec Simons had a hat trick for the Gryphs while Jackson Nishimura added a pair of goals and Adam Kromer also scored. James Short had two assists and Mike Berger had one.

Connor Ham and Connor Brown each had three goals for Brock while Davis Neal scored twice and single goals were netted by Grayson Houghton, Kurtis Woodland, Latrell Harris, Campbell Parker and Mitch Gustavsen. Houghton and Alex Pace each had two assists and Ham, Neal, Woodland, Harris and Cree Blakely had one apiece.

Hayden Walsh made 10 saves in the Gryphon net while Josh Wood made 15 for Brock.

The Badgers (10-1) advance to Friday’s Baggataway Cup championship tournament quarter-finals at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium where they’ll play the Nipissing Lakers (6-5) at 4 p.m. The McGill Redmen (10-1) are to play the host Toronto Varsity Blues (4-6) at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s semifinals pit the Nipissing-Brock winner against the Trent Excalibur (10-1) and the McGill-Toronto winner against the Western Mustangs (10-1).

Semifinal winners are to battle in the Baggataway Cup final Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
