Gryphon lacrosse men sparked by five-goal quarters

SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons turned in three five-goal quarters on their way to an 18-10 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Sunday at Laurentian University Stadium.

The Gryphs held quarter leads of 5-3, 8-4 and 13-5.

Three goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter turned a 3-2 deficit into the 5-3 lead at the end of the quarter.

Mitchell Ogilvie led the Gryphs with five goals and four assists while Mike Berger netted a hat trick. Ben Heidecker had two goals and two assists while James Short and Brandon Tanacs also added two goals apiece. Collecting single goals were Quenton Begin, Liam Corbett, Jackson Nishimura and Colin Walker. Begin and Corbett each had two assists while Short, Tanacs and Ross McCullough had one each.

Patrick Fitzhenry struck for a hat trick for Laurentian while Sam Postma and Adam Elinsky scored twice each. Following with single goals were Mike Kussman, Ty Mikulik and Liam O’Donoghue. Kussman had three assists while Fitzhenry, Postma, Mikulik and Matt Smith had one apiece.

Hayden Walsh was in net for the Gryphs while Jake Kelly was in net for Laurentian.

The Gryphs are tied with the Toronto Varsity Blues for third in the West Division at 3-2. Laurentian is fifth at 2-4.

The Gryphs and Blues are to tangle at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium Saturday at 8:30 p.m. and host the Brock Badgers, leaders of the West Division at 6-0, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
