Gryphon lacrosse women to play for seventh
KITCHENER – The Guelph Gryphons will play for seventh place Sunday morning in the OUA women’s lacrosse league’s championship tournament.
The Gryphs had a win and two losses in the first two days of the three-day tournament.
They opened the tournament with a 13-3 victory over the York Lions Friday before falling 9-4 to the Queen’s Gaels later in the day.
Saturday, Guelph suffered a 12-8 loss to the Trent Excalibur.
Scoring details were not reported.
The Gryphs are to play the McMaster Marauders in the seventh-place game. The Marauders also have a win and two losses as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 14-3 before losing 11-3 to the Western Mustangs and 9-2 to the Brock Badgers.
Guelph had finished the regular season in seventh place at 3-9-1 while McMaster was eighth at 2-10-1. The Gryphs had a win and a tie with McMaster in the opening two weeks of the regular season. Guelph won 7-4 Sept. 10 and the teams tied 4-4 a week later.
Queen’s and Western are to meet in the gold-medal match. Both have two wins in the championship tournament as Queen’s defeated Guelph and the Laurier Golden Hawks 9-7 and Western beat McMaster and the Toronto Varsity Blues 10-4.
Western had finished the regular season in first place at 12-1 while Queen’s was second at 10-2-1. The teams met once during the regular season with Western winning 11-2 last Sunday on the final day of the regular season.
The seventh-place match between the Gryphs and McMaster is set for 9 a.m. The gold-medal game between Queen’s and Western is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
