Gryphon men ninth at university/college golf tourney

THORNTON, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons finished ninth in the men’s team standings at the Canadian University/College Golf Championships Thursday at Tangle Creek Golf & Country Club.

The Gryphs finished with a four-round total of 1,240.

Laval Rouge et Or claimed the title at 1,211 to finish two strokes ahead of runner-up Laurier Golden Hawks. Two-time defending champion UBC Thunderbirds were third at 1,216.

UBC captured the women’s team title for the second year in a row with a four-round total of 934 while the Toronto Varsity Blues were second at 987 and Victoria Vikes third at 992. The Gryphs were not represented in the category.

Four players counted for their team’s men’s scores while three counted for the women’s scores.

Evan Holmes of UBC, the 2015 individual men’s champion, reclaimed the honours by finishing at 289 for the tournament. That was good for a five-stroke gap to the deadlocked duo of Kevin Fawcett of Toronto and Baptiste Mory of Laval.

For the Gryphs, Joshua Polisuk tied for 19th at 307, Nicholas Striker tied for 22nd at 308, Marc-Anthony Manion tied for 27th at 310, Nicholas Freeman was 52nd at 322 and Trevor Whiton was 54th at 325.
